Risks of LASIK Eye Surgery
While Lasik eye surgery has
come a long way in the past decade, there are still some risks
to be aware of. Most people have no problems and find the
procedure to be quick and painless. While that is the intention
of all the professionals involved, it doesn’t always
happen.
The risks that are involved
in Lasik eye surgery aren’t expressed to scare you. However, it
is important that you do have a realistic picture of what could
take place before you commit to the procedure. Most people heal
up soon after the procedure is completed. However, some
individuals due develop an eye infection that must be
treated.
The results you get from
the Lasik may not be what you had anticipated. In some
instances there wasn’t enough correction done. In others, there
was too much and so the vision you have isn’t as great as you
would like it to be. This may be corrected with another surgery
in some circumstances. Finding a well qualified doctor to
perform the Lasik surgery will significantly reduce this risk
though.
In very rare cases, Lasik
patients have complained that their results were worse than
what they were before the surgery. This is often due to do an
error the doctor makes or inaccurate medical information
provided by the patient. A person may experience blurred vision
due to a haze that develops after the surgery as
well.
The flap that is created
after the incision around the cornea is very important. If the
doctor doesn’t do a good job, it could be damaged. It has to be
secured back into place very specifically. Failure to do this
can result in the flap becoming infected. In some instances it
can end up being lost and having to be replaced.
It is best to have both of
the eyes corrected at one time if they need to be. Some
patients choose to only do one at a time though. This is a risk
as they eyesight they have from the two combined may not work
well together. It can result in problems with perception. This
can cause a person to fall, get into a car accident, or other
similar incidents due to their vision not being what it needs
to be in order to perform these functions at an optimum
level.
Some individuals are afraid
they will come out of Lasik surgery and be blind. That is
something that won’t happen though. For the most part the risks
involved in the procedure are quite minimal. Most of the
problems that patients do encounter are can be corrected
without too much trouble. You will need to discuss if they will
be corrected at no charge or not.
The infections can end up
being quite painful though so paying attention to them is
important. Any pain in the eye should be immediately reported
to the doctor. That way they can evaluate the situation and get
you relief for it as quickly as possible. This type of
infection won’t go away on its own. There is also no reason for
you to suffer for days before you seek assistance.
It is the responsibility of
the location where you are getting the Lasik done to go over
all the risks involved in it with you. That way you can make
your own decision about whether you are willing to take them in
order to reap the benefits of the surgery. It is standard
procedure for the location to require you to sign a release
form stating you understand the risks and consent to the
procedure. Otherwise they won’t schedule you for Lasik eye
surgery due to liability issues.
