What is LASIK?
You have likely heard the mention of Lasik surgery in reference to improved eyesight. It is often advertised on
TV, billboards, magazines, and even online. Yet you may not fully understand exactly what it is or the process for
it. Lasik is a type of surgery that takes place in order to offer someone the ability to see better without having
to rely upon eyeglasses or contacts.
The exact benefits though vary by individual. Some people will still have a need for contacts or glasses if the
results aren’t good enough to warrant being without them. However, most patients see a huge improvement in their
vision after the healing period and don’t require them.
In order to keep your eyes where they need to be during the procedure, you will be give drops. They will result
in you being unable to blink during the procedure. Some people find this to be stressful as blinking is such a
normal process for us. Being prepared for it though and focusing on something else will help you to get through
it.
A device called a speculum will keep your eyelids open as well. Some people find this to be uncomfortable,
but it won’t be painful. It can be uncomfortable to see tools coming at your eyes as well because our natural
defense is to turn or to close our eyes. You won’t be able to do either one during the Lasik procedure.
The process involves high tech instruments that are only used by trained professionals. An incision is completed
very near the cornea so that a flap is made. The thickness of the flap will depend on what the current vision
status of the patient is. Extreme care is taken to ensure the flap is the precise thickness in order to offer the
patient optimum vision after the surgery is completed.
The flap is moved so that the cornea can be accessed by the professionals completing the surgery. It is here
that the correction to the vision is done with a laser. After the professional is satisfied with the work the flap
is put back into place. Care is taken to make sure it is placed exactly where it should be.
There aren’t any stitches to keep the flap in place. This is due to the fact that our eyes have a type of
suction that keeps it in place where it should be on its own. This means you won’t have any scarring or other
concerns around the eye area. In fact, no one will ever know you have had Lasik surgery unless you tell them.
Due to the exact nature of Lasik, patients can be in and out of the surgery within a couple of hours. Most won’t
have any discomfort after it is done. It will take a few days for the results of the surgery to be known. It is
best for the patient to have someone to drive them home after the procedure and for the first couple of days as
their eyes adjust to the changes.
Lasik isn’t right for everyone, but if you wear glasses or contacts you may want to schedule a free

by the very next day following the LASIK operation.

might occur with LASIK. There are a lot of complications actually; however, these can be resolved if guided by
